During a first stay in 1903, Raoul Dufy discovered the light of the South in Martigues, made famous by Félix Ziem, the precursor of Impressionism, and where many painters (Auguste Renoir, Paul Signac, etc.) preceded him. It inspires him with a brightened palette and luminous canvases, such as this view of the port.
