Tote bag Germaine Richier I A la gloire de la main

"The work of Germaine Richier (1902-1959) occupies a unique and essential place in the history of 20th century sculpture. Trained in the tradition of Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle, the artist asserted herself in just over twenty-five years - from the 1930s to her early death in 1959 - as profoundly original and radical. Her art extended the achievements of the classical craft and of bronze statuary while participating in the essential conquests of modern sculpture. His powerful and moving art forged a new image of man and woman after the war, with complex and changing identities, playing with hybridisations with the animal or vegetable world." [...]

"Graphic work is at the heart of Richier's creative process, as she traces an "architecture of lines" directly on the body of her models, a very personal adaptation of her academic teaching. She herself practises engraving intensively, in which these graphic games and variations are deployed.

Anne Coulondre, curator of the "Germaine Richier" retrospective.
