About the Artwork

Study for Portrait (Michel Leiris) [Etude pour portrait (Michel Leiris)]

Francis Bacon (1909-1992)
Study for Portrait ( Michel Leiris)
1978
Huile et peinture aérosol sur toile
35,5 x 30,5 cm
In 1975, the painter and the writer Michel Leiris get acquainted. A friendship between the two men is born, during which Bacon will make two portraits of the writer. The pathetic face that the painter outlines, consumed by the abyss, echoes the text in which Leiris describes his existence as a theater of shadows, whose cranium would constitute the scenic space.
