Born in the United States, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is one of the most fascinating sculptors of the twentieth century. Starting his career in Paris in 1926, he first becomes famous for his miniature circus consisting of hundreds of figurines made from recycled materials and animated by rudimentary mechanisms. His characters made out of wire are full of humor and imagination. Often inspired by artists or entertainers like Josephine Baker, Calder's artworks turn sculpture into mobile drawings.
