Description

Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
Tête blanche et rose
1914
Huile sur toile
75 x 47 cm
A confusing canvas, the White and Pink Head is one of Matisse's great portraits. A realistic oil study of a figure in a striped blouse with a black ribbon pendant around his neck seems to have been the starting point for this bust "portrait" with its flat, simplified forms, to which a grid of black lines is superimposed that geometrizes the figure and tends to extend its surface in space.
