The Algerian woman is a particularly provocative figure, in which Matisse demonstrates his virtuoso ability to combine sensual impact with decorative force: from the transparent green gauze shirt with a face lined with plaster pink violently surrounded by black - a mask effect that heralds many others - to the enigmatic zigzag shape that emerges to the left of the woman's shoulder, linking her to the space in the background while appearing to be the emanation of her vitality.
