Description
This exhibition offers a rereading of the history of photography of 20th- and 21st-century photography through the prism of human representation.
It brings together two photographic collections collections : the public collection of the Musée national d'art moderne
- Centre Pompidou and the private collection of a French collector, Marin Karmitz.
Men and women have been privileged subjects of the photographic medium since its origins. Models and/or actors of these images representing them, they embody the fashions, styles, particularities as well as the obsessions and ways of seeing of the photographer. Posed portraits, bodies spied on or "in themselves", collective bodies, in struggle or oppressed, fragmented bodies and forbidden bodies... How does photography participate in the birth of identities, and their visibility? How does she document their individuality, their relationship with others, their struggles, their disappearance and their possible rebirth?
The catalog offers several essays, including a text on the dialogue between private and public perspectives and an interview between Marin Karmitz and the curator and director Julie Jones. The iconographic richness is interspersed with notes written for each work.
