Description

A self-taught painter and poet, Tang Chang (1934-1990) was born within a Chinese family in Bangkok. Drawing his own trajectory, he deviates from the models fashioned after Western modernism that then dominate the Thai art world. At the heart of his practice lies a concept derived from Taoism and Chan Buddhism: the undifferentiated unity of multiplicities.

The exhibition brings together for the first time in France key pieces of the artist and unpublished sources dating backing from the 1960s to the 1980s. It highlights a work of resistance to the established order, which today complicates the history of gestural abstraction and concrete poetry, and the links between painting and writing that, in the 20th century, Europe's interest in Asian art has crystallised - questioning as well the unidirectional narratives that make Western artistic currents the source of modern art.
