Description

An overview of Art Brut on an international scale, featuring 300 works from Bruno Decharme's collection. Includes essays by specialists exploring the concept of Art Brut, biographies of the artists, and a retrospective of the history of this artistic movement.

The exceptional nature of this volume is due as much to the quality of the works brought together as to their unique histories, as these works were often saved at the last minute from oblivion or probable destruction.

Taking the collector's perspective, this catalogue highlights the creators of art brut and, through the essays by the contributing specialists, attempts to define it without limiting it. Two 'journals' included in the publication provide further insight: one contains biographies of the 180 artists, highlighting the richness of their life stories, and the other a comprehensive and previously unpublished chronology of Art Brut, explaining its strong links with the histories of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, spiritualism, and modern and contemporary art.
