Description
When speaking of his friends, Surrealist painters Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, poet Octavio Paz would call them "two bewitched witches". The saying would also go for Ithell Colquhoun, painter and alchemist, who joined the Surrealist movement in 1939.
This collection of nineteen texts, including ten translated in French for the very first time, gathers writings by these three artists who made Surrealism and esoterism the field of their emancipation. From poetry to tales, from fable to initiation stories, these texts written between 1937 and 1975 evade the notion of literary genre. On the other hand, they all attest to the capital importance given to humor, dark and surrealist, fantastical finally, following Guy de Maupassant's and Edgar Allan Poe's legacies.
