Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Ponthus Hulten | Catalogue de l'exposition

9782386540196

The exhibition catalogue brings together three major figures in 20th-century art: two passionate, rebellious artists, the French-American Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) and the Swiss Jean Tinguely (1925-1991); and a visionary museum curator, the Swede Pontus Hulten (1924-2006), who was also the first director of the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou.
Love and friendship, daring, challenges to each other, mutual influences and solidarity in times of trial were the driving forces behind the three protagonists' exceptional careers. Their complicity gave birth to spectacular works that left their mark on their time and were as many singular adventures lived under the sign of freedom, commitment, even joyful anarchism.

Description

The exhibition explores the key moments in the careers of Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) and Jean Tinguely (1925-1991). An exceptional couple united, beyond their love affair, by unfailing artistic ties and mutual enrichment, they enjoyed a high profile thanks to the impetus given by Pontus Hulten (1924-2006), the first director of the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou.

Thanks to the impetus provided by Pontus Hulten, who made a name for himself in the museum world at a very early stage, the two artists, themselves driven by a vision of art as an act of rebellion against established norms, enjoyed a high profile. Hulten, driven by a radical and innovative approach to museums, offered his unconditional support to the pair of artists, whose anarchist ideas of art for all, multidisciplinary and participatory, he shared.

As well as celebrating two of the 20th century's leading artists, driven by the vision of a visionary museum man, this book examines their way of thinking, which saw the demand for autonomy in art, the questioning of institutions and direct contact with the public as the driving forces behind creation.
