Description
Founded in 1957 amidst a flourishing international avant-garde artistic movement, the Situationist International brought together various theorists and artists who aimed to dismantle class society and the "dictatorship of commodities" by constructing "situations." The Society of the Spectacle (Guy Debord) and The Treatise on Living for the Use of the Younger Generations (Raoul Vaneigem), both published in 1967, profoundly influenced the generation of May '68. Beginning in the early 1960s, the friendship, collaboration, and correspondence between these two major figures of the Situationist International continued until 1970, the year of the last remaining member's resignation from the organization.
